“Our days on earth are like a shadow.” 1 Chron. 29:15
The God who lives forever has placed Himself at the head of a band of pilgrims who continually ask “how long?”.
“How long O Lord? How long?” Ps. 89:46
We ask, “How long must I endure this sickness?” “How long must I endure this unloving spouse?” “How long must I endure this thankless job?” Do you really want God to answer that? He could you know. Do you think that will make you feel better or worse if He does? He could tell you exactly in terms of this earth, minutes, days, weeks, months, years. “You will be sick for two more years”, or “You will spend the rest of your life in that marriage”, or “You will be able to change jobs in five years”. God seldom does that. He usually chooses to measure the here and now against the there and then; and when you compare this life with that life, this life really isn’t that long. “Lord, give us understanding of the vast difference between temporal and eternal.”
